Floral and botanical absolutes: the delicate soul of perfumery
Absolutes are highly concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from flowers, roots, and resins that cannot be distilled without losing their aroma. This process captures the subtlest soul of extremely delicate plants, such as jasmine, tuberose, and mimosa.
Unlike essential oils, which are obtained by distillation, absolutes require a slower, more careful, and more technical process, in which the temperature must be kept low to avoid degrading the volatile compounds.
How to Make an Absolute (and Why It Matters)
At The Glass Atelier, we value not only the final result, but also the journey that leads to it. The traditional process involves:
-
Extraction with mild volatile solvents , such as hexane, at controlled temperatures.
-
Obtaining an intermediate product: “ concrete ”, a dense aromatic paste.
-
Purification with ethyl alcohol to isolate the absolute, which is then carefully filtered and evaporated.
This method allows us to preserve even the most fragile molecules, responsible for the most emotional nuances of a floral scent.
This is how we manage to capture not only the scent, but the entire identity of a flower: its freshness, its texture, its soul.
