Castoreum Natural: An Olfactory Treasure of Classic Perfumery

In the world of perfumery, there are ingredients that, due to their rarity and unique characteristics, become true treasures for fragrance lovers. One such ingredient is castoreum, known for its distinctive olfactory profile and its ability to add depth and longevity to perfumes.

Origin and characteristics of castoreum

Castoreum is an oily secretion produced by the glands of beavers, used by these animals to mark their territory and protect their fur. In perfumery, it is used in the form of an alcoholic tincture or absolute, obtained by extracting and aging the dried glands. This process develops its characteristic aroma, described as animalic, smoky, leathery, with sweet and balsamic undertones.

Applications in perfumery

Historically, castoreum has been a key ingredient in the creation of perfumes with animal and leather notes. Its fixative properties make it a valuable component for prolonging the duration of fragrances and providing unparalleled depth. Although its use has declined today due to ethical considerations and the availability of synthetic alternatives, it remains valued in niche and artisanal perfumery.

A vintage gem from Ibiza

This Castorium belongs to the collection of a perfumer from Ibiza. It's very difficult to know the exact date, but the perfumer who sold it to me had it stored away since 1960; it was an inheritance from his father.

This castoreum, having been aged in a controlled manner for such a long time, develops a very coumarin-like, vanilla-like, phenolic aromatic profile, reminiscent of smoked leather. It's a marvel of Castorium, impossible to imitate with synthetic creations.

Conclusion

Castoreum is an iconic ingredient in classic perfumery, prized for its distinctive aroma and its ability to enrich olfactory compositions. Although its use is increasingly limited, it remains a prized ingredient for perfumers and connoisseurs seeking authenticity and depth in their creations.
